was elected Secretary General at its 1st general conference in 1994. Other leaders include Hadi Ali, the second man of the party after secretary general. Ali was elected as the Director of the party's Political Bureau after their fifth convention in 2008. This Council includes all the leaders of the party and they are about 40-50 people. ‘Ali Muhammad Ahmad, Dendaar Najmen al-Doski, and Umar ‘Abd al-Aziz.
It is chiefly active among students (reportedly winning nearly 40%
of the vote in Dahuk

particularly in Arbil
and enjoys good relations with both the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
and the
Kurdistan Democratic Party.

The riots were in response from the KIU pulling out from the Democratic Patriotic Alliance of Kurdistan
and it resulted in killing 4 members of KIU,one of them was a member in KIU leadership, this happened after their offices in Duhok, Zakho and other several areas been exposed to shooting from policemen and security-men who supported the protesters instead of protecting KIU offices.. KIU professes non-violence, and supports the Islamic Kurdish League

which provides services to the poor. Represented on the Iraqi Governing Council.
In November 2005, this KIU decided to run separate from the other Kurdish groups in the December 15, 2005 election for the Iraqi Council of Representatives (parliament). In the January 2005 elections,KIU was part of a broad coalition of Kurdistan parties. This time it is running independently with an agenda of "reform and services.". It declared that pluraslim in Kurdistan is not practised, and that voters should be given a choice. On the Kurdish national causes, the KIU says it will be defending the rights and the constitutional achievements of the Kurds.

- KIU strives for settling the border of the federal Kurdistan Region, which includes resolving the Kirkuk issue within the interval allocated by the constitution, and reintegrating the dismembered parts to the Kurdistan region.
- Compensating the victims of the genocide operations, such as the Anfal and Halabja, and the harmed and disadvantaged under the previous regime.
- Supporting any sincere effort and procedure in restoring the security and stability in Iraq, and bringing the abnormal state of violence and assassinations to an end. Appealing to deepen the spirit of dialogue and peaceful coexistence among Iraq’s constituent mosaic.
- Defending the religious, political, civil, administrative and cultural rights of other nations in Iraq—Turkman, Assyrians and Chaldeans—and all the religions and sects on the basis of equity in citizenship, rights and responsibilities.
- Preventing gender discrimination in employment and appointment in the official positions, and rather taking skills, qualification and experience into consideration.
- Confronting violence against women; be it murder, punishment without legal conviction and killings based on suspicion or any other pretexts or justifications.
- Attempting to root out the corruption phenomenon—economic, administrative and political—and prosecuting the criminals at any rank or position. Courts are the proper places where to refer corruption cases to.
- In codifying constitution articles in a law, the KIU list will work for preserving the rights and constitutional achievements of the people of Kurdistan, general rights and the public freedoms, and the Islamic identity of the majority of the society.
- KIU list works to guarantee children rights. Children must have access to medical, educational, and amusement services. KIU also works to start welfare and community centres to care for and serve the orphans and provide for their needs in terms of health care, education and learning opportunities.
- Benefiting from of the Islamic dimension of the KIU to further consolidate the causes and the position of our people in Kurdistan.
- Supporting the efficiency and independence of the Iraqi civil society and its institutions.
- The right of residency is one of the legal rights of every citizen, so our list will try to provide suitable habitations for every Iraqi citizen to protect the privacy and integrity of every family.
- Working to implement the article 109 of the constitution. Allocating the share of Kurdistan from the budget assigned for reconstruction in a way that matches the population and scale of the damage caused by the former regime.
- Seeking to entitle a larger number of students from Kurdistan to study abroad thorough state-funded scholarships.
- Monitoring the government and its constitutionality.
- Organizing the law of the regions in the Council of Iraqi Representative, taking into the consideration Kurdistan's special status.
- Making utmost benefit of the Iraqi federal government’s capacities to serve the youth in Kurdistan.
- Striving to increase the salaries of the civil servants to insure a decent life.
- Developing and updating the education curriculum, supporting teachers, clearing the obstacles to teaching and education and upgrading the education system on every field.
- Working to increase and improve the scale of the services provided by the Iraqi federal government such as electricity, gas, etc.
- Developing the private sector and entrepreneurship, supporting businessmen and free trade, and facilitating internal and external investment. This sector needs to be organized by law, protected from corruption and exhausting red tapes, and opened to every citizen without any discrimination and monopoly.
- Developing the private sector, supporting the commerce and traders, facilitating the internal and external investments, organizing them in accordance to the law, avoiding the corruption and bureaucracy and making the investments accessible to the citizens without prevention or manipulation.
- Caring for the agriculture sector and farmers through:
- Restoring and upgrading the irrigation systems.
- Improving the quality of the product by importing new seeds and eliminate the farming pandemics
- Supporting the farmers by awarding agricultural bank mortgages, delivering the services to the villages and improving the transportation and marketing issues.
- Developing and improving the industry sector in Iraq to increase the national income, decrease unemployment and build a productive community.
- Making efforts to protect the environment by eradicating the sources of pollutions and promoting environment awareness. Supporting the jurisdiction of environmental law.
- Working to solve the problems of transportation, and the traffic suffocation of the cities
- Working to refurbish the current dams in Kurdistan and constructing new ones in order to protect and benefit from the water resources.
- Striving to abolish the aftermath of the Ba’ath Party’s culture of dictatorship and ethnic and sectarian superiority. Promoting values and culture of moderation, tolerance, coexistence and human rights.
- Attempting to broaden youth participation in the political, social and economic life and facilitating making new families through marriage. Ensuring a minimum life standard that satisfies their needs and expectations.
- Championing free media, and supporting whoever believes in the freedom of press and helps promoting it.
- Working to lower unemployment rates, provide social security and boost work opportunities.
- Backing the continuation of the food ration and its betterment in terms of quality and quantity, or replacing it with monthly wages.
- Proposing bills that ensure the progress, freedom and development of the universities and education institutions. Encouraging academic research and supporting the professors, scientists and scholars in order to advance the community through domestic scientific capabilities.
- KIU’s list will strive for health care for the Iraqi citizenry through promoting health awareness and developing medical treatment in return for minimum charges. Health insurance is a duty that needs to be carried out by the governorate councils.
