Kovalam is a small village,about 25 km from the main city of Chennai on the East coast road. Once you reach there, you have the famous Kovalam beach to venture into. There are fishermen who will take you on boats into Bay of Benagal. The boat will go about 4-5 kilometers into the ocean. The boat men would then throw the ropes into the water. You can jump into the ocean and swim to your hearts content. All would be provided with life jackets. Swimming so far away from the shore is a thrilling experience especially for the first timers.The beach with coconut trees looks very wonderful during early morning and Sunset evening.
This is also a very popular school outing destination. The village is also home to salt flats and producer of sea salt for the region.jayacarmel church is a big and old Christian church in kovalam which is built in 1805 by portuges
