Originally called the Kugruk, the river's name was changed to avoid confusion with other rivers that had the same name. The river drew gold miners in the early 1900s, though development slowed after the second World War. The Kougarok also contains various wildlife. The Nome-Taylor Highway passes along the river at its end.
