The Kosciusko Railway was formed to operate the former Aberdeen District of the Illinois Central Railroad between Aberdeen Junction and Munsons Crossing, Mississippi. The 21.66 mile railroad line was purchased from the Illinois Central Railroad by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and leased to the Kosciusko & Southwestern Railway.

The Kosciusko & Southwestern Railway was founded in 1998. Its terminals and stations include Aberdeen Junction and Alberts in Holmes County, Mississippi and Boyette, Sallis, McAdams, Thweatt, Algoma, Kosciusko and Munsons in Attala County, Mississippi. The company once specialized in transporting wood products from local woodyards but now is mainly in the car storage business. The railroad operates on an as needed basis.

The railroad interchanges with the Canadian National Railway at Aberdeen Junction.

The railroad is a subsidiary of Mississippi Rail Group, Inc.
