Mulingzi is famous for his signature skill "Seven Harms Fist" and his acts of heroism. Mulingzi hates villainy and acts of evil so he often roams the jianghu in his younger days as a youxia, helping the poor and punishing the evil. In his later years, Mulingzi still retains his fiery temper and strong aversion towards evil. Whenever he sees any of his disciples committing an act of evil, he will punish the disciple severely. He is especially strict towards his own disciples.

In the setting of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, Mulingzi has died and Kongtong is led by the Five Elders. Kongtong joins the other major sects in the campaign against the Ming Cult

, the newly-appointed leader of the cult, saves it from destruction at the hands of the six sects. Zhang also heals one of Kongtong's elders, Zong Weixia, with his medical skills during the fight, and inadvertently improves the cult's relations with Kongtong. Zong and some Kongtong members later appear to help Zhang Wuji rescue Xie Xun from Shaolin Monastery, even though Xie is considered to be their enemy.

In another account of Kongtong's origin, Kongtong is founded by Feihongzi, a former student of Shaolin who later becomes a reclusive pugilist the in Kongtong Mountains.

Martial arts

Kongtong's martial arts bear some similarity to those of Wudang and Kunlun, as it has its roots in Taoism as well. Its main focus in martial arts are improving physical fitness and increasing inner energy strength. A unique feature of Kongtong is that its members do not use the traditional weapons such as swords, sabers and staffs which are commonly used by pugilists. Instead, Kongtong has its own unique customised weapons which come in all forms and shapes, but nevertheless as deadly. The weapons' designs make them easily concealable and can be used as secret weapons during combat to achieve victory. Some of its most famous skills include: "Seven Harms Fist" (七傷拳), "Soaring Phoenix Hand" (飛鳳手) and "Yin and Yang Grind" (陰陽磨).
