The causes for its abandonmenment are disputed; although it occurred during the general decline of civilisation at the time, there are no distinctive traces of destruction. The presence of various caches concealed by metalsmiths suggests that the population left, intending to return to reclaim the treasures, in turn suggesting they were killed or enslaved.
