Kodungoor is a small town in Kottayam district
of Kerala state
in India
. Kodungoor is 25 km from the district headquarters, Kottayam & 29 Km from Changanassery , 7 Km from Ponkunnam. The Kottayam-Kumaly road (NH 220) passes through the town. NH 220 ( KK Road ) splits into two, just after Kodungoor. One to Changanassery & other to Kottayam.
The place got its name when the Devi of the Temple came here following a Kartha, a firm devotee of Devi. After resting a while when Kartha had lifted his umbrella(olakuda)he couldn't lift it because of the divine presence of the Almighty. And thus a temple had built there for the Devi' The place thus came to known as Kudathangiya oor and later brevetted as Kodungoor.
Kodungoor is well connected to all major town like Pala, Manimala, Pallickathode, Changnacherry, Ponkunnam, Ranni and Kottayam through Road.
On travelling to Kumaly, Kodongoor is a small town just before Ponkunnam. For pilgrims to Sabarimaa, kodungoor is an intermediate stop. There is an easiest route to Sabarimala through Kodungoor. Also, the Devi Temple offers space to take rest & there is a big pond near the Temple which is open to Public.
Kodungoor is a major point on the way to Sabarimala Temple of Lord Ayyappa.
Kodungoor is in Vazhoor Panjayath of Kottayam district. Vazhoor panjayath office is located at Kodungoor. Vazhoor Post Office is also situated in same building of panchayath office.

Kodungoor Devi Temple
Kodungoor is famous because of Kodungoor Devi Temple near to the town which is one of the most ancient temples in the state. This major temple administration is governed by Travancore Devaswom BoardDevaswom boards in Kerala
