There are only a small number of pupils in the entire school (for instance there were 46 pupils attending in 1998) and classes are also small, typically around 8 pupils, allowing greater interaction between pupils and teachers, as well as catering for the specific needs of the pupil.

Knowl Hill was founded in 1984. As well as standard classrooms, the school also provides science labs, computer labs as well as art and design technology rooms. The school itself is small, as are the grounds within which the school are located. Because of this, certain activities or sports take place outside of school, such as tennis which takes place on public tennis courts within Pirbright itself around a five minute walk from the school.

 or year 6 and go on to attend schooling in regular schools since in many cases by this age, pupils have caught up with the national education system and are able to cope with the full demands of the National Curriculum in an ordinary environment. However, for other students it is possible to sit GCSE exams while at the school.
