It is a small town with NMDC colony, bus stand, railway station,Government Hospital and a college. Kirandul used to have a satellite township called Kailashnagar.
, Kirandul had a population of 19,053. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Kirandul has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 64%. In Kirandul, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Kirandul and Baster-region in general has been a home for the aboriginal People (Mama-Muria) for a very long time.

. This was the place where Goddess Sati's teeth was found. Also near the temple there is a big slab where footmarks of Lord Rama are marked in a stone. It is believed that someone created it when Lord Rama came there. It is also documented in Ramayana that Lord Rama loved the Dandakaranya

Chattisgarhi People are great devotees of Lord Rama and Mother Sita. They are known to celebrate Ganesh Puja, Ramalila, Dusshera, Deepawali, Holi, Janamashthami and other festivals. The iron ore mines here are also an important tourist attraction. Run by the Navratna Organization,'NMDC', these mines operate with the latest technology and hi-tech machinery. However, one needs to obtain Permit to visit the mines, which can be done by requesting the NMDC office.

This NMDC sponsored and maintained hospital provides free medical attention to all the NMDC employees , their kin and the tribal s of the area. The Hospital has latest medical equipments and is upgraded very frequently by the government.
Regular bus service available from Raipur and Bhilai as well as from Hyderabad ,Vishakhapatnam , and other states like orrisa . A/C Volvo buses run in this route and takes about 12 hours to reach Kirandul.

Culture
Many engineers, doctors, teachers and traders moved to Kirandul. Hindi is the prime language of communication. English is also spoken. Other national languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujrati, Marathi, Marwari, Kannada, Oriya and Bihari are also spoken in small communities. Chattishgari is very popular.
