The Kingdom of Brittany was an entity in the history of France
. It was created when Erispoe was appointed King of Brittany in 851
. Erispoe was the son of Nomenoe, the missus imperatoris to Brittany from the Kingdom of France since 831
, but Nominoe had rebelled against Charles the Bald
in 845
because of a dispute over the County of Nantes
. Breton independence was consolidated by the Battle of Ballon

) and the Battle of Jengland-Beslé (851
), after which King Charles granted Erispoe the status of a vassal king.
Britanny sank into a period of unrest due to a succession quarrel following the death of Salomon in 874
and due to Viking invasions, and the title of King lapsed. Alain Barbetorte and his successors only ruled as dukes rather than kings.
