Kharian is a city of Gujrat District
in the Punjab
province of Pakistan
. The chief city of Kharian Tehsil
, it lies almost midway between Lahore
and Islamabad
on the Grand Trunk Road
(colloquially known as the GT road). This is the road which connects the city all the way to Bangladesh
, India
and Afghanistan
and was used during British Rule
to transport goods across the South Asia
. The main railway line also passes through Kharian thus providing good transportation to the northern and southern parts of Pakistan

Kharian is also home to a large medical facility/hospital (CMH Kharian Cantonment
) run by the Army. This hospital provides specialised indoor and outdoor medical care and houses a special burn centre for treatment of patients with severe burn related injuries.
Since Kharian is located in the land fringed by the Jhelum
and Chenab
rivers, there is no shortage of irrigation water and the land is very fertile.

Muhammad Alam Lohar
( محمد عالم لوہار), one of the most prominent Punjabi folk music singers, was born in Kharian.
" consists of a beautifully planned general residential-cum-garrison colony. The roads are laid out in a grid pattern and are lined by beautiful all weather trees. The residential areas include the North colony, Afzaal colony and the IJ colony.
In 1956, it was planned and construction took its start. International companies like Gammon and Caterpillar were here to build the Garrison. One of the market place inside cantt area is named after that company where they stayed during construction.
At that time that, an aerial view of the cantonment area would reveal the blocks of barracks arranged in the formation of USA letters. All villages were relocated by government and the land was given in substitute to the other places. Mosques and graveyards still can be seen today inside the army area. At some places you will also find some of the graves of 9 yards length "Nou Gazza", specially found in the districts of Gujrat, Sialkot and Multan. It is famous about them that at old time the famous saints were buried with 9 "Barchies" spears as an honour to them.
The cantonment has a hospitable services mess/club to provide a location for social activities, an elegant mosque and a beautiful park. There is also a busy shopping area, a well equipped military hospital (CMH Kharian) and two degree colleges, one each for girls and boys.
Kharian Cantt is a center for education. National and international-level schools and colleges are available within the premises of Garrison.
