Purchasing content, either online or through physical media, creates a unique key stored in a digital rights locker that unlocks the ability to stream the content to any electronic device capable of playing it. Because the actual content remains on the servers as opposed to being downloaded and played locally, the manufacturers retain control of access to the files.

Reception

Obstacles

There are a number of potential obstacles to implementation. Critics suggest that current US internet capabilities may not be enough to support widespread use of cloud-based VOD. In addition, as cloud-based systems are reliant on the integrity of the server, distributors would have to ensure that systems are robust enough to prevent loss of data.

However, the biggest obstacle would seem to be the competing UltraViolet

system which has the support of all the other major Hollywood movie studios apart from Disney.
