Allred returned to Idaho in 2003 and founded The Common Interest the following year, a non-profit organization dedicated to formulating nonpartisan solutions in Idaho public policy.

In May 2010 Allred decisively won the Democratic nomination for Governor of Idaho with 81.7 percent of the vote. He will face Republican incumbent Butch Otter and Independent candidate Jana Kemp in the November 2010 general election.
