. The current airport main terminal building was opened in 1979, and has served international flights since 1985. The airport was renovated for the Kazan millenium celebrations in 2005. It currently handles nearly one million passengers yearly, and serves medium- to large-sized aircraft. The airport has received visits from dignitaries including heads of states, premiers, and foreign secretaries. The terminal area of the airport parks 20 aircraft. The concrete runway is built upon an older, dismantled 3500 m runway.

The main terminal building is currently looking somewhat outdated. A new modern business-class terminal was recently built, and further developments are due: a new railway connecting the airport directly with central Kazan is expected to be completed for the 2013 Summer Universiade

A bus runs every hour from the bus terminal in Kazan to the airport. However this service is not available 24 hours a day.

The airport is still often referred to locally as the new airport, as from 1979 till end of 1980s there was also a second airport for local airlines, Kazan-2 Airport
