History

Kate's origin is related to Maratha history and is due to the scattering of the 96 main clans of Maratha. However, clans of Maratha royalty such as Bhosale, Bhoite, Ghorpade, and some others never marry among themselves due to worship of the same Devak/Totem.

Kate is associated with service under the Muslim Sultanate of Deccan and they also contributed to expansion of the Maratha Empire in India.

King Shivaji's father, Sardar Shahaji rao Bhosale, Jadavs of Sindkhed, Nimbalkar, Ghorpade, and other clans affected Maratha politics in the Pre-Shivaji Era, along with Srimant Bapuji (Babaji) Rao, a Kate nobleman from this clan.
