Kars is a small village
on the Rideau River
within the rural
section of the city of Ottawa
, Ontario
. Prior to amalgamation in 2000 it was part of Rideau Township.
The community is located just south of Manotick, Ontario
(a small suburb
of the city) and to the west of the village of Osgoode, Ontario
.
It was originally named Wellington. In 1856, in order to distinguish it from another settlement called Wellington in Prince Edward County, the village was renamed Kars - a name chosen to commemorate the siege
of the Turkish town of Kars
and the Canadian-born General William Fenwick Williams
who had undertaken its defense.
Schools include Kars Public School and Rideau Valley Middle School
. Public high school students in this area go to South Carleton High School
in Richmond
unless they qualify for the gifted program hosted at Bell High School in Nepean. The Kars Fair is held annually in July.
Rideau Valley Air Park is located to the south of the village and is the base of operations for the Rideau Valley Soaring School.
