Etymology

The Karki is arrvived from Sanskrit word. Karki means a straw that can be found abundantly in this place. Earlier name of Karki was Durvapura. It is believed that maharshi Durvasa did tapasya here and name came.

History: Karki is having the history of more than 1000 years. When Tippu Sultan had war with British in Honavar, he moved through this place. A small road is called tippu road justifies this. The Chennakeshava temple is believed to be 600 year old temple. Idol of this temple came from Basavaraja Durga. We can see the carvings of Ramayana inside the temple.

Geography: Karki is situated in Konkan area of Karnataka. One side of Karki is Arabian sea and other side are the Sahyadri hills. Badagani river flows in Karki.
Climate: Karki is costal area , weather is hot in summer. It receives heavy rainfall.It is 5 km away from Honavar.

People: Most of the people are working in nearby offices. Many people migrated to Bangalore and Mumbai, in search of jobs. Some of them settled there.

Transport: Karki is connected by rail and road. NH-17 passes through this place. Konakan railway station is situated in Karki.

Education: Primary schools and high school are available.

More: The population in Karki is quite widespread. Hence a lot of the ancient trees and greenery is found in plenty. The place is abounding with greenery in the monsoon months. The monsoons are also a time of activity! Farming is done, especially the transplantation of paddy. The paddy is harvested in the months of April- May. The paddy is dehusked at nearby mills in the neighbouring village. The straw or hay is fed to cattle. This is the year round activity for many households!

Natural places of beauty includes the pristine beach, the hilly areas with streams flowing through, the long stretches of fields and the local temples.
