Lord Ayyappa and Dharmasastha are the incarnations of the same infinite power. Legends say that after achieving his birth goals, Lord Ayyappa merged into Dharmasastha. Sabarimala Ayyappa is also said to be an unparalleled power that the Thanthrik practices separated from Dharmasastha for the purpose of worship.

Kariyavattom Sree Dharmasastha Temple is one of those temples in Kerala where the very charismatic charm and uniqueness of the idol takes you to the unknown realms of spirituality. The idol has in it, the effulgent divinity of some 1000 years! Besides the main charismatic idol of Sree Dharmasastha, a whole lot of ‘upadevathas’ or subordinating deities too are installed in abodes called ‘Srikovil’. The offerings are made for Sree Dharmasastha, Sree Maha Ganapathi, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Chathan.

Kariyavattom Sree Dharmasastha Temple has been the singular refuge to many a lot devotee. Even today, hundreds of devotees from every nook and corner of Kerala and nearby states visit the temple so as to offer their prayers. Dharmasastha is believed to be the ‘guarding god’ of Kariyavattom and other adjacent villages.
