She unsuccessfully contested Redditch in 2001 and 2005, before finally taking the seat at the 2010 election.

In the House of Commons Karen sits on the Welsh Affairs Committee, the APPG on the Maldives, Azerbaijan, Moldova and also the Conservative Technology Forum. She is setting up three new APPGs: Bosnia (which she will chair), Serbia and Macedonia.

Karen is company secretary of RKL Geological Services Ltd and also a trainer for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy which has involved travelling to Bosnia, Slovakia, Serbia, Mozambique, Moldova, Montenegro and the Maldives where she worked to help elect the new President of the Maldives.
