While studying at Xavier University, the brothers met alleged drug kingpin Richard Peña of New Orleans, who legitimately financed their music career. Prosecutors later claimed that Peña urged the Garcias to work in his drug ring, prior to his 1997 arrest in which he pleaded guilty to his involvement in eight murders. Lawyers for the rappers suggested a plea deal in which they would plead guilty to drug conspiracy charges and admit to having received 10 kilograms of cocaine from Peña in 1996 and 1997. At the time of the Garcia's arrest, Pena had already pleaded guilty to these charges in a separate agreement with prosecutors two years earlier. Pena was already two years into serving a life sentence when the Garcia's were indicted. The initial deal was rejected, and in September 2001 the Garcia brothers were sentenced to three years in prison for refusing to cooperate with prosecutors.
