History

Channel 23 had previously been the home of educational television station KRET-TV
KRET-TV
KRET-TV was an instructional television station in Richardson, Texas on channel 23, which was on the air from 1960 to 1970. The station was owned by the Richardson Independent School District. The station was the first broadcast TV station in the nation to be wholly owned by a school district...

in nearby Richardson from 1960-1970. But the station was transitioned to a closed-circuit television system and the broadcast license was returned to the FCC.

The current channel 23 license signed on in September 1986 as KIAB with English speaking religious shows in the morning, Spanish programming from SIN (Spanish International Network, which became Univision the next year) in the afternoon and evening, and shop at home programming on the overnights before Doctor Elizabeth Vaughn sold it to Univision in 1988.

At that point, the station began running Univision programming 24 hours a day, with some local Spanish speaking newscasts as well.

and was transferred to Bill Trammell in 1990. In 1994 the station license was transferred to Rodriguez-Heftel-Texas and the deal was consummated on the 10th of April, 1995. The license was transferred to KESS-TV License Corporation and that deal was consummated on the 16th of May, 1996. The last transfer to date was (BALTTL-19960510IC) in 1996 and transferred the station to Univision. The station moved from channel 31 to channel 47 in 2001. KUVN-LP became a class A low power TV station and changed its call letters to KUVN-CA on March 1, 2002. KUVN-CA is not a repeater as a class A low power station can not be a mere repeater. A construction permit was issued by the FCC on August 4, 2008 to allow KUVN-CA to become a digital Class A television station. The construction permit allows the station to transmit with 190 watts on channel 47.

News operation

In the summer of 2010, Noticias 23 started using a new graphics package formatted for high definition, and began using an updated version of its news theme ("Turning Point") which is shared among many Univision affiliates in the United States and Puerto Rico; however, KUVN does not currently broadcast its local newscasts in high definition, unlike fellow Univision-owned stations KXLN-DT, KMEX-DT, WXTV-DT or WORA/WLII/WSUR. There are no known current plans for KUVN-DT to begin carrying its newscasts in high definition.

On April 11, 2011, KUVN began broadcasting Primera Edicion and Vive La Mañana on Telefutura affiliate KSTR (channel 49). Like its newscasts at different times, it is broadcast in 480i

standard definition, within their old studio set. Sister station KXLN-DT in Houston also uses the same titles for their newscasts; Vive La Mañana features a different graphics and music package shared by both KUVN and KXLN. In May 2011, KUVN announced that a new set for its newscasts will be introduced in the coming months.
