The station, one of the first smooth jazz stations in the country, aired in 1996. The frequency was allocated less than three years before to KLCX Palm Desert

station. Though KLCX began as one of the most ambitious broadcasting projects to come to the Coachella Valley in years, the station soon fell on hard times. Financial troubles forced the sale of KLCX, its license and equipment to RM Broadcasting, owners of KPLM Palm Springs and KAJR

RM Broadcasting hired smooth jazz concert promoter Jim "Fitz" Fitzgerald as an independent contractor to head KJJZ as its program director and morning drive personality, positions he holds to this day.
Like sister station KPLM, KJJZ is active in bringing top name talent to the area for concert performances via Mr. Fitzgerald's promotions company. Fitzgerald also sponsors "Fitz's Jazz Café," an ongoing series of small concert venues which has featured name artists such as Michael McDonald

headlined the station's 2008-09 New Year's Eve party.
