History

KBSD began on July 24, 1957, as KTVC, licensed to Ensign with a studio and transmitter at Dodge City. Cowles Broadcasting purchased KTVC in 1962 and united it with KTVH Hutchison (now KWCH), KLOE Goodland and KAYS Hays to form the Kansas Broadcasting System. In the mid-1980s, KTVC's call letters were changed to KBSD, to reflect the regional identities of the other KBS satellites (KLOE became KBSL; KAYS became KBSH).

KTVC/KBSD produced a full local newscast for many years, in addition to carrying the newscast from KTVH/KWCH. More recently, the station has been downsized to contribution reports to the Wichita newscast and web content supplied through KWCH.COM. Master control and commercial scheduling functions for KBSD are now handled through a fully digital operating system based at KWCH in Wichita.

KBSD-FM

From July 24, 1957 until June 12, 2009, KTVC at first and KBSD from 1989 unitl June 12, 2009, was broadcast on the radio in Southwest Kansas on 87.7 FM. This is possible because channel 6 is close to the FM radio band and radios sold in the United States at the time. KBSD made history in Kansas by being the first 87.7 FM radio staiton that Sign On and broadcast for 51 years 10 months 2 weeks and 5 days or 18,938 days. It was the second 87.7 FM station that went off air and the only 87.7 full power radio station in Kansas. It was the only televison station providing severe weather coverage in-house from KWCH in Wichita, parent of KBSD-TV and KBSD-FM (KBSD was a satellite staion to KWCH as it still is today), that was on the radio during the Greensburg Torando in May 2007.

Digital TV

In 2009, KBSD-TV remained on channel 6 when the analog to digital conversion completed. It changed its callsign to KBSD-DT to reflect the switch to digital on June 25, 2009.
