Hannay was named to make his debut at the age of 16 during the 1996 season; however, his selection was vetoed by the Australian Rugby League

, as he was not 16 years of age at the beginning of the year. In 1998 he made his first grade debut for the Cowboys. From 1998 to 2006 he was a regular first grade centre for the Cowboys and becoming the club's greatest point-scorer. He kicked 2 goals from 3 attempts in the Cowboys loss to the Wests Tigers

Hannay signed to play for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 2007 until the end of 2008. In 2007, after struggling for form in top grade and Premier League both he and fellow Sharks recruit Brett Seymour

 were told they were not wanted in Premier League. Hannay then played his trade for the Gymea Gorillas before signing with the Crusaders.

Josh Hannay was used mainly as a centre and goal-kicker for the Celtic Crusaders.

In August 2009, Hannay, along with five team mates, were ordered to leave the United Kingdom after the UK Border Agency
