He was born on June 19, 1841 in Ohio to Andrew Hoagland, and he had a brother, Cornelius Hoagland (1828–1898). In 1865 he married Caroline C. Matlack and they had a son, John A. Hoagland.He had an acrimonious split with his business partner, William Ziegler
