Jonglei is the largest state in the Republic of South Sudan, with approximately 122,479 km2, as well as the most populous according to the controversial 2008 census conducted during present-day South Sudan's second period of autonomy. Bor is the capital of the state. The current governor of Jonglei State is Kuol Manyang Juuk

Jonglei State is inhabited by about almost five tribes namely the Murle, Jieng (Dinka), Nuer (Naath), Anyuak and the Kachipos at the border of Ethiopia in the East of Boma. Jonglei State is bordered by Ethiopia in the East, Eastern Equatoria at the South East and Central Equatoria at the South. For many years, Jonglei State had been the centre of politics backdated to the failed project of the Jonglei Canal
