Townshend was the son of John Townshend, 5th Marquess Townshend

, and Lady Anne Elizabeth Clementina Duff. He succeeded his father in the marquessate in 1899. Lord Townshend married Gwladys Ethel Gwendolen Eugenie Sutherst, daughter of Thomas Sutherst, on 9 August 1905. Their children included:

Lord Townshend died in November 1921, aged 55, and was succeeded in his titles by his five-year-old son George. Lady Townshend later married Bernard le Strange and died in 1959.
