John Thomas Donovan was born in the Claddagh

John Thomas Donovan attended, St Ignatius College (Galway), S.J. and Clongowes Wood College
, S.J. He attended the Royal University (Queen's College, Galway) -now the National University of Ireland, Galway- (BA 1906) and then Trinity College Dublin where he took his BL. In 1909 he sat the examination for the Indian Civil Service, was appointed and arrived in India on the 13 November 1910 where he served at Bengal as an Assistant Magistrate and Collector. In April 1916 he was appointed Registrar of Cooperative Societies and in 1921, Secretary for Agriculture and Industry in the Government of Bengal. In 1925 he became Magistrate and Collector. In 1931 he was made Companion of the Indian Empire.
In 1916 he married Sarah Devane of Limerick, Ireland, Sarah's brother, James, was serving in the Ceylon Civil Service.
John Thomas returned to Ireland in November 1933. He became the 2nd Organising Secretary of the Irish Bank Officials' Association
, retiring from that post in 1948. He died in Dublin, Ireland in 1973 and is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery
