Dr. Hoggard had an active career in education, beginning with his election as Chairman of the New Hanover County (NC) Board of Education in 1935, and ending with his death in 1965. John T. Hoggard High School is known being one of the top Quiz Bowl teams in the state and for its sudden entrance in the Quiz Bowl circuit in 2007. After winning the State Championship of the Public Library Quiz Bowl the previous year, Hoggard made strong showings in its first few tournaments, placing in several, and eventually achieving a First Place victory at a 2008 tournament in Salisbury, NC that qualified the team for the NAQT tournament in Chicago. Due to lack of funding, the team was unable to attend, and instead participated in the PACE National Scholastic Championship, where it placed 33rd in the nation. Science Olympiad
Hoggard's Science Olympiad team has had extremely good showings in recent years by achieving consistently in the top 4 overall in state, having missed making it to the national level by one place in 2008 and 2009, and by two places in 2007. The Science Olympiad team is headed by Miranda Dungan, with help from other teachers from Hoggard's science department. The current president of Hoggard Science Olympiad is Nathan Hansen, with President-elects James Kang and Rosa Yang assisting.
