Professional career
Sargent turned professional in 1990 and began his career in spectacular fashion with 17 consecutive wins, but he was inactive for about 18 months following his 17th win. On his return from that layoff Sargent lost controversially to a virtual unknown, Carl McGrew. Sargent continued to fight sporadically, interspersing long breaks - as long as three and a half years - which hampered the development of his career.
