John Mosely Turner was a British supercentenarian
and the oldest recognised living person
for more than two years. Of all the undisputed cases of male longevity, Turner held the title as the oldest living person for the longest period of time.
Turner was the 11th person to hold the title of oldest living person since its inception.
Born in Mitcham
, Turner was a former silk print cutter, and teetotaller. Turner died at his home in Tottenham
at age 111 years 280 days. He had been blind since the age of 73. Turner was first listed in the 1964 edition of the Guinness Book of Records
as Britain's oldest man, and became the oldest man in the world on 6 August 1965, upon the death of William Fullingim. He surpassed the age of Geert Adriaans Boomgaard
and Demetrius Philipovitch in 1966, and the now disputed case of James Henry Brett, Jr. in 1968, to become the then oldest man ever, unless Thomas Peters
is considered validated. Turner's record was allegedly broken by Shigechiyo Izumi
in 1977 and Mathew Beard in 1982, but these cases are also disputed, so it may have been Alphaeus Philemon Cole
who surpassed him, as late as 1988.
