John McKay was born in 1883 and worked in the North-East pits from the age of 12.
At the age of 27 the Miner's Union sent him to Ruskin College Oxford where he gained a distinction in the Oxford University Diploma in Economics and Political Science. He then became a Checkweightman and was later elected MP for Wallsend in 1945.
On 25 April 1963 he was made a Freeman of the Borough of Wallsend.
(The same honour had been given to Aneurin Bevan on 18 October 1952)
