McCue first became associated with his local club Stoke City

 as a fifteen year old although, despite turning professional during the Second World War, his debut in the Football League was delayed until the end of the conflict. He was nevertheless a first team regular during the 1946–47 season, Stoke's highest ever finish, and remained a fixture in the side from then on. He remained with the Potters until 1960, playing at left-back in a highly rated full-back partnership with Billy Mould

. McCue became one of the club's all-time leading appearance makers and would be the record holder were war-time games taken account.

He finished his league career with two seasons at Oldham Athletic, where at the age of 38 he forged an equally successful partnership with former Manchester City full back Ken Branagan
