for 'great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty' in defusing bombs during World War II, particularly for his courage in defusing a bomb which had fallen on Chatham Dockyard and was fitted with an anti withdrawal device. He was gazetted on 27 December, 1940. Babington was attached to HMS President
