 as an Air Warfare Advisor in the Force Development and Analysis Division. He then completed a one year exchange posting with the New Zealand Ministry of Defence

 before being appointed as a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. After the fellowship position he was posted as Director of the RAAF Air Power Studies Centre and then posted as Defence Attaché Southern Europe, based in Rome and accredited to Italy, Israel, Greece and Turkey.

On return from Italy he was appointed as a Deputy Director at the Australian Defence College and then Director of Military Strategy at Australian Defence Headquarters before being promoted to Air Commodore
