John Dennis (bishop)

John Dennis was the Bishop of Knaresborough
from 1979 to 1986 and the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich from 1986 to 1996. Now retired, he is an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Winchester. He is the father of comedian Hugh Dennis
.
Dennis was educated at Rutlish School, Merton
and St Catharine's College, Cambridge
before studying for ordination at Cuddesdon College, Oxford
. After curacies

he was appointed vicar
of the Isle of Dogs
in 1962, transferring to Mill Hill
in 1971. After appointment as a prebendary
of St Paul’s Cathedral, London in 1977, he became the Bishop of Knaresborough
in 1979 and then the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1986.
