John Cherry (rower)

John Conrad Hazlehurst Cherry ( 7 September 1914 - 1 February 1943) was an English rower
who competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics
.
Cherry was born in Paddington
and educated at Westminster School
and Brasenose College, Oxford University. In 1936 he was a member of the losing Oxford
boat in the Boat Race. Later in the year he was a member of the crew of the eight
which came fourth representing Great Britain at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin
. He again rowed for Oxford in the Boat Races in 1937 and 1938.
After being commissioned into the Royal Navy during World War 2, Cherry was killed in action on 1st February 1943 when serving as a Lieutenant on HMS Welshman a cruiser-minelayer sunk by U617 northeast of Tobruk.
