Bovée began his career in politics and government for Republican
causes and candidates the same year, working for two County Supervisors and a candidate for Mayor
in Kern County, California. He served on Ronald Reagan's Kern County finance committee in 1980. Bovee continued to work in Kern County Republican politics from 1981 to 1985.
In 1985 Bovee moved to Sacramento and worked in the California State Assembly as Chief of Staff for two different Republican members. In 1986 and 1988 Bovee helped run the campaigns of the top Assembly Republican target, Assemblyman Bill Filante, winning both times by comfortable margins.
From 1985 to 1990, Bovée was one of the top fund-raisers for Republican California State Assembly
candidates. From 1988 to 1995 he was the Executive Vice President for a statewide trade association; he also oversaw the activities of their political action committee.
In 1995 John Bovee founded The Bovee Company, a republican fundraising firm.
