Houghton was selected as a WA Under-18 representative in 2009, and played all 5 games at the championships, kicking 10 goals. During the WA state screening later in the year, and ran a beep test of 15.1, outstanding for someone of 194 cm. Houghton was drafted to the dockers on his birthday, and was later presented with the No. 17 guernsey.
