 Jim had a passion for comedy from a very young age, but did not enter into the business himself until he was 27. Having been educated in Hinckley Jim went on to De Montford University and graduated with a First-class Honours degree in English.

Smallman first entered into comedy whilst working at Next. He attended a 12 week comedy workshop to help him with his nerves whilst giving presentations. Whilst having no intention of attempting any gigs on this workshop, Jim discovered that he enjoyed being on stage and decided to engage in comedy on a professional level.

In 2006 Jim was a finalist in the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year

 competition. Continuing his success, Smallman went on to be a finalist in the Leicester Mercury/Equity New Comedian of the Year 2007.

In 2009 Jim's first hour-long show, The Boy Next Door Gone Wrong, was nominated for the Best Debut Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival

. The show drew on past experiences with alcoholism and an addiction to painkillers.

2010 saw further triumph for Jim as he picked up two awards at Hollywood Fringe; Best International Show and Best Comedy performance.
