McManus was born to Jim and Margaret McManus on September 16, 1940. McManus had one brother by the name of Tom. McManus was married to his wife Carole for over thirty years and had two children, Kate and Jordy. McManus grew up in North Carolina and learnt the game of tennis at the Berkeley Tennis Club where he got tuition from a series of coaches including Tom Stow.
