Jim Butterworth is the adjutant general (T.A.G.) of Georgia National Guard. Butterworth replaced Maj. Gen. Terry Nesbitt who retired after more than 40 years of service

The Adjutant General of Georgia is responsible for more than 14,000 personnel in the Georgia Department of Defense, which includes the Georgia Army National Guard, the Georgia Air National Guard and the Georgia State Defense Force.

Butterworth formerly represented the 50th District of the Georgia State Senate until his appointment to T.A.G. by Governor Nathan Deal in September of 2011.

Early life and education

Butterworth is a graduate of the University of Georgia

, and was active in the Air Force R.O.T.C. program at UGA. He was named "AFROTC Cadet of the Year" two of his four years at Georgia. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.

Early career

He served in the United States Air Force for 12 years, finishing his career flying B1 bombers with the Georgia Air National Guard. He then became a pilot for Delta Air Lines

Political career

Butterworth served as chairman of the Habersham County

 Board of Commissioners where he negotiated a 25 year water contract providing the county with up to three million gallons of water a day. He helped pass a Special Local Option Sales Tax to finance transportation, economic development, recreation and natural resources improvements.

Butterworth serves as Chairman of the Senate Higher Education committee, Vice-Chairman of Banking and Financial Institutions, and is also a member of the Economic Development, Natural Resources, and State and Local Government Operations committees. He also serves as an Administration Floor Leader for Governor Nathan Deal

Butterworth has served as an executive board member of several organizations, including the Georgia Mountains Regional Development Center, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs All hazard Council and the Georgia DCA Regional Advisory Committee.
