In the 2004-2005 season, Ruan qualified for the U.S. Junior Championships on the Intermediate level after placing second at her regional championship. At the Junior Nationals, Ruan placed 6th. She was coached by Robin Wagner and Silvia Fontana

She did not qualify for the National Championships on the Novice level in 2006. In the 2006-2007 season, skating on the Junior level, Ruan placed 5th at the Eastern Sectional Championships and missed qualifying for the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships by one placement.

In the 2007-2008 season, Ruan won the silver medal at her Regional championship and won her sectional championship to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships on the junior level. She placed 10th overall.

She switched to competing for China following that season. She made her international debut for China at the 2008-2009 ISU Junior Grand Prix
