Jagdschloss

A Jagdschloss is a palace or a castle in a zoo or a hunting zone such as a forest, field or lake and served primarily as the accommodation for a ruler, and the court, on the occasion of the hunt in the area.

Jagdschlosses were mostly used for banquets or gatherings before the hunt. They sometimes also served for non-hunt related parties and similar arrangements. The Jagdschloss is often equated with the Lustschloss, particularly as the hunt was also a recreational activity. However, the Lustschloss

Lustschloss are free in their decoration, while Jagdschloss have always had a relation to hunting: this can be manifested by antlers and other trophies, by hunting paintings, and also by a deliberate showing of wood or natural materials; Jagdschloss can be equipped, for the rest, absolutely preciously. , timber-framed buildings or log cabins were no rarity, nevertheless, they have kept only a few luxurious constructions from stone which determine today the understanding of the Jagdschloss.

Stables and other constructions usually belonged to the Jagdschloss. It also served as a storage place for hunting equipment, coaches and suites. Larger Jagdschlosses often form self-sufficient ensembles, while smaller arrangements, which are called lodges, are often established in castle parks and gardens. Most Jagdschlosses are in reach of the residence of the respective prince/family.
