The beginning

He started coaching after he quit playing rugby in 1988 with his former team FC Auch Gers

 until 1995. In 1995 he arrives at Colomiers with which he wins, in 1998,the Challenge Cup. An encore for the European trophy is made two years later by Brunel, this time on the bench of Pau. In 2001 Jacques Brunel enters the technical staff of the french national team under the guidance of Bernard Laporte

, training the forwards until the 2007 world cup. After his experience with Les Bleus finished there he lands on the bench of Perpignan.

Perpignan (2007–2011)

In the 2008-2009 season he is crowned champion of France. For the next season he reaches the final of the Top 14, defeated by Clermont. In 2011, however, many disappointments on French soil, with Perpignan failing access to the playoffs, what makes him miss the 2011-2012 edition of the European Cup, where he arrived as stated in the semifinals. He is replaced by Jacques Delmas at the end of the season.
