Sources disagree on the year Marshall was born. According to his Bethlehem Steel bio, he was born in 1902, but the Scottish FA states he was born in the late 1890s. Regardless, Marshall began his professional career with Scottish club St. Mirren

 at a relatively young age. In November 1919, St. Mirren transferred Marshall to English club Middlesbrough

 for a few games, but he was back in Bethlehem in December. He remained with Bethlehem until the team folded in 1930.

He is also reputed to have spent time with Greenock Morton.
