Drafted by the Minnesota Twins
in the 27th round of the 1971 amateur draft, the first baseman/outfielder played in the minors until 1979, spending each of his final three seasons at Triple-A. In total, he hit .303 with eight home runs in 932 games. He played in the Twins, Cincinnati Reds
and San Diego Padres
farm systems.
He managed in the minor leagues in the 1980s and 1990s. He skippered the Reno Silver Sox
(1980–1981), Reno Padres (1982), Beaumont Golden Gators
(1983), Spokane Indians
(1984–1985), and AZL Rockies (1995). In 1990, he coached for the San Diego Padres
and from 1999 to 2001, he was the Florida Marlins
hitting coach. Following his time as a major league coach, he returned to coaching in the minors.
In 2007, he was a roving minor league hitting instructor for the Atlanta Braves
and from 2008 to 2011, Maloof held the title of Special Assistant to Player Development for the Kansas City Royals
