Jack grew up near in a small town called Para Para not far from Takaka in the South Island of New Zealand

. Originally a cross-country mountain biker, Jack turned to road racing in 2007. His career has taken a dramatic rise since then, in particular during his 2009 stint in Belgium where he won numerous road races.

Jack attended Otago University from 2003-2006 where he completed a Physical Education degree. He also played Bass in a 4 member alternative-rock band called Dream Farm whom frequented many of the night clubs in the Dunedin
