Due to the national scale of the National Film Awards, it is considered equivalent of the American Academy Awards. Ministry of Defense gives him full support for his war films. In Indian Army, no celebration is complete, without playing the song 'Sandese ate hain' from his film "Border".

He is the son of O.P. Dutta

In his personal life J P Dutta is married to the Bollywood film actress Bindiya Goswami
with whom he has two daughters Nidhi and Siddhi. He is also famous for his temper in the Indian Film Industry.
He headed the feature film section jury for the National Film Awards (2010), according to sources in the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
