Various references provide different and often contradicting information about his exact birth name and what name he used in which competition. The majority of the sources however seem to suggest, that his original name was Ismail Mustafov, Ismail Huseinov or Ismail Mustafov-Huseinov, and his name was forcibly changed to Ivailo Marinov, Ivailo Khristov or Ivailo Marinov-Khristov under the Zhivkov regime.Amateur career
